Portugal — Som Nath Sapkota, a long-time advocate for Nepali politics and diaspora engagement, has been appointed as a member of the Election Publicity Committee of the Nepali Congress. This appointment recognizes his decades of dedication to the party and his active work connecting Nepalis around the world.
Sapkota began his political journey in Nepal as an active member of the Nepali Congress before 1996, contributing to grassroots initiatives during a crucial period in the country’s democratic movement. After moving to Europe in 1996, he continued his commitment to the party while strengthening its presence among Nepalis living abroad.
During his time in Europe, he served as Vice President of the Nepali Janasampak Samiti Portugal, where he helped organize the Nepali community, promote democratic values, and maintain strong connections with Nepal’s political developments. He also played an active role as a member of the Nepali Janasampak Samiti Europe Coordination Committee, coordinating efforts across multiple European chapters and encouraging political participation among the diaspora.
Beyond politics, Sapkota serves as DGS of the NRNA International Coordination Committee, working to strengthen ties between Nepal and Nepalis abroad. He is also a recognized tourism promoter for Wales, appointed by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Nepal, promoting Nepal’s rich culture and tourism globally. Known for his social engagement, he has earned respect across the international Nepali community for fostering collaboration, unity, and community development.
Sapkota has served as an election observer in past elections and is again participating in the current electoral cycle, reflecting his strong commitment to democratic values and transparency. For the upcoming general elections on Falgun 21, 2082 (Nepali Calendar), he has been appointed as a member of the Election Publicity Committee under the leadership of Nepali Congress spokesperson Debraj Chalise. His specific responsibility is to coordinate activities both abroad and in his birthplace, Baglung District, ensuring strong participation and engagement at all levels.
Speaking about his appointment, Sapkota said:
